This week UKS2 have been learning a bit more about French adjectives. There are quite a lot of rules about them ( like: most of them come after the noun – so far we have only used petit & grand which come before the noun.), but we today we learned that they have to agree with the noun that they describe. Whaaaaaat???
Well, if you remember, it’s vital to know what gender your noun is, and how many there are. So ask yourself 2 questions:
- Is it a masculine or feminine noun? ( Words starting with un or le are masculine, words starting with une or la are feminine.)
- Is it singular or plural? ( singular means only one, plural means there are more than one of them.)
Masculine singular noun – don’t add anything
Un chat bleu
Feminine singular noun – add e to the end of the adjective
Une tortue verte
Masculine plural nouns – add s to the end of the adjective
Deux chats bleus
Feminine singular nouns – add es to the end of the adjective
Deux tortues vertes
As with all the best grammar rules, there are some exceptions in French – we’ll look at them in more detail later on. Or for more information about French adjectives, click here.
In year 4 we had a great Skype with Madame Le Calvé’s class – we had looked at their answers to our Padlet questions, and they had put a padlet of information about their town Cambrai in the Twinspace for us. We really enjoyed asking them questions, and answering theirs. They were very interested in our school uniforms!
In Y3 we learned how to use the phrase “je suis” which means I am. We played Quiz Quiz Trade, and wrote some brilliant sentences!
