Dictionaries and Dates

Today has been so full of great moments. I don’t know where to start!! I think I’ll go with Y3 who were such great learners this morning – they used bilingual dictionaries for the first time, so we started off by looking at alphabetical order, and sorting some words. Then we had a good long look at how the dictionaries are organised to help us find words. Y3 thought that the colour coding was very useful, as were the markings on the edge of the pages – very good observations ! We then played I Spy, and used the dictionaries to look up the French words for pictures on the I Spy sheet. You could have heard a pin drop, they were all so absorbed in their learning. Proud teacher 🙂

Then Y4 learned how to say the date in French – so we had to revise days of the week, months and numbers up to 31. Then we learned that dates in French don’t have “th” on them, and don’t start with a capital letter. So today would be jeudi le vingt-sept avril. Once we had learned to say the date, we played a game a bit like “battleships”, circling dates on calendars, and trying to cross off the dates that our partner had circled. My favourite quote was “aren’t we doing any learning today Miss” from a pupil (who shall remain nameless!) who was clearly having too much fun…. You know who you are !

In Y5 & 6 we learned the verb avoir and used the Talk 4 Writing technique to learn a story in French. We learned quite a few new words and lots of BSL signs to help us retell the story. For those of you who wanted a copy of the story to practise for next week, here it is:

Year 5 had a lovely Skype call with Madame Le Calve’s class too – they told us about their hobbies (in English), and we told them about our favourite subjects and why (in French). They also helped us to learn the verb aller (to go).

We have to get really good at it for next week, so we can sing them the song we learned by DJ Delf. Keep practising !
